Russian launch to mark golden anniversary of human spaceflight

Russia and the world will begin celebrations Tuesday of the golden anniversary of humankind’s first steps into space with the launch of two Russians and one American aboard a Soyuz bound for the International Space Station.

The flight will also carry Meco, the Space Tweep Society Birdonaut, into orbit for a lengthy stay aboard the orbiting lab.

It was April 12, 1961, in which Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin lifted-off from a then-secret launch site to become the first human ever to not only fly in space but to orbit the earth.

Russia in his honor has named the crew’s Soyuz TMA21 spacecraft Gagarin in honor of the late-cosmonaut.

Two Cosmonauts, Soyuz commander Aleksander Samokutyaev and flight engineer Andrei Borisenko, and NASA astronaut and flight engineer Ron Garan are scheduled to lift-off aboard a Soyuz-FG rocket on April 4 at 6:18 p.m. EDT (4:18 a.m. April 5 local time), from the Baikonur Cosmosdrome in western Kazakhstan.

A mission patch for Meco

If you hadn’t heard already, our society mascot, Meco the birdonaut, will be making his first trip into space next month. He will be traveling (in the form of one of our Space Tweep Society patches) to the International Space Station with astronaut Ron Garan, @Astro_Ron, on Soyuz TMA-21.

A few months back, we asked members to draw their own mission patches for Meco. We only had a few submissions, but they were all great. You can see them here together in the collage above. They were designed by @zarquil’s son, Kelley (top left), @zarquil (top right), @zarquil’s daughter, Rebekkah (bottom right), @spasmunkey (bottom left), and @geekygirlau (center). You can download a large copy of the collage of designs here. Huge thanks to all of the artists for the great work!

One of the artists, @geekygirlau, has generously allowed us to use her design to promote this historic event. I am pleased to announce that her design has been added to our Lands’ End e-store and you can have it embroidered on shirts, jackets, bags and more (it is a little too large to fit on hats). Just select the item you would like, add it to your cart, and you will come to a screen with a drop-down menu to choose the logo you want. Select “Meco ISS Patch” and the location on the item that you want the logo.

Today only, there is a free logo promotion from Lands’ End. You can save over $11 on each item on the embroidery application fee by using the promotion code EMLOGO.

Note: If your shopping cart shows a higher amount for tax than expected, do not worry, the correct amount will be charged. They are working on fixing this issue.

Help keep the Space Tweep Society Operating

The Space Tweep Society has always been about sharing enthusiasm for space, and it operates on a very small budget. I never wanted it to be about fundraising, but we do have a few expenses to keep the website going. Tweeps, if you can donate a little it would really help out. It doesn’t have to be much; every contribution will be greatly appreciated!

Expedition Patches for Meco – Updated!

Update: The deadline for creating an expedition patch for Meco has been extended until the end of October! So for those of you that forgot or didn’t think you could come up with one, here’s another chance just for you! To get those creative juices flowing, we have a few examples of designs already submitted below. A very special thanks to Mark (@zarquil) and his kids, Rebekkah and Kelley, for letting us show their patches! Once all the patch designs are submitted, there will be a document created containing all of them for everyone to see! Have fun everyone and let those creative juices start flowing!

Original Post: I have some exciting news! The Space Tweep Society’s birdonaut mascot, Meco, is scheduled to travel to the International Space Station this coming March- courtesy of @Astro_Ron! Meco (in the form of one of our Space Tweep Society patches) will be launching on Soyuz and will be on a very long duration expedition. Thanks, @Astro_Ron for taking him along! Thanks, @CAtkeison for arranging the trip!

Now Meco needs a patch design for his very long duration expedition. In fact, since he is so special, he needs a whole collection of different designs and it is up to you to make them. This isn’t a contest; it is just a fun activity for members who want to participate. Patch designs should be your original artwork, ideally produced in a digital format. A drawing that is scanned or photographed is acceptable as well. The designs submitted* will be posted on our website for everyone to enjoy. Kids are also encouraged to participate.

Submissions for this activity will be accepted from now until the end of August; simply email them to spacetweepsociety at gmail dot com. Format is not important, as long as I can open and view the file- .jpg, .pdf, .bmp, .png, .psd, etc. Make sure to include your Twitter name, so I know who it came from. (For children or other non-tweeps, you can just give their first name and relationship to you, like: “Sarah, student of @janellewilson”)

As an added incentive to join in the fun, if you include your mailing address when you email your design, I’ll send you something cool, no matter where in the world you live. You can submit multiple designs, but you still only get one cool thing in the mail per participant.

Have fun; Meco is counting on you!

*Fine print- Designs containing copyrighted images belonging to others, objectionable language or message, political statements, advertising, offensive imagery or that are off topic (i.e. not designed to be an expedition patch for Meco) will not be displayed on the site, nor receive a gift in the mail. This is at the discretion of the site’s administrators. Remember, this is supposed to be a positive thing!

Space Tweep Society 1st Anniversary Twelebration

The party took place at a restaurant on Cocoa beach called Fishlips (isn’t that a good nick name for a 1930s mobster?). After an eventful day (traffic, Atlantis launch, hanging out at Kennedy Space Center Visitors Center and watching Magnificent Desolation – Walking on the Moon 3D with fellow A4Hs), I drove to Cocoa beach (location of Fishlips). It was already packed with people from the NASA Tweetup and others who came to party after watching the launch. There was beer and food and joy all around – after all, everyone there was a space enthusiast who 4-5 hours earlier got to see a perfect space-shuttle launch…

Read about it and reminisce – http://www.spacepirations.com/2010/06/space-tweep-society-1st-anniversary.html

Trivia Stars Contest

In case you didn’t know, the first anniversary of The Space Tweep Society is coming up very soon. To celebrate we’re having a “Twelebration” on May 14th, but we know that not everyone can be there. As mentioned in my last post, there are some fun things planned for those who can’t attend the event in person. This contest is for you!

Trivia Stars Contest- click to enter

Note: This is for the virtual attendees only. Those who attend the Twelebration event at Fishlips are not eligible.

This is a 10 question, astronomy and spaceflight themed quiz. The questions are such that learning is encouraged in the process. Yes, that is correct, some learning and research may be required. You are allowed to take it only once per twitter username and your results will be recorded at the end. Remember, this is not only a quiz, but also a contest.

After the contest is closed Thursday at noon EDT (16:00 GMT) on May 13, 2010, the tweeps with the highest scores will be selected for prizes. In the event of a tie, tweeps with the highest scores will be entered into a drawing where the winners will be selected at random. Winners will be tweeted from the anniversary event at Fishlips. Look for a tweet from @spacetweeps announcing the winners. Good luck and have fun!

Contest: Make your own Meco

For the Space Tweep Society’s upcoming first anniversary “twelebration” we’ve got lots of great prizes from our four sponsors to give out. @thinkgeek, @LandsEnd4Biz, @ProachModels, and @CollectSpace have hooked us up with awesome stuff and here’s how you can get your hands on some of it.

We will be having a series of contests. This one requires advance planning, so we are announcing it now, but there will be several contests that will only be revealed at the event. Any tweeps may enter the Make your own Meco contest. There will be two groups separately judged, one in-person for those attending the event at Fishlips, the other online, for tweeps who cannot be there.

If you are not already aware, Meco is the name of the Space Tweep Society’s adorable little birdonaut mascot. He was named after the acronym MECO, which stands for Main Engine Cut Off, a critical point in rocket ascent. The idea is, as the name of the contest suggests, to make your own Meco. If you are thinking, “but I don’t sew” – don’t fret. You can make Meco out of nearly anything, toothpicks, legos, wax, aluminum, beads, macaroni, whatever. Entries must be fabricated, crafted, assembled, decorated, etc. by the entrant. In other words, you (and only you) must create your own entry. There are no provisions for team entries, only individuals this time around. The exception to this rule is that you may have children 12 and under help you.

Here’s the needle felted Meco I made this weekend, for an example:

For the in-person part of the contest, the only limitations are that Meco should be somewhat three dimensional, he should be able to fit inside a box measuring one cubic foot (i.e. 12 inches on all sides), and no pyrotechnics, hypergols, ordnance, razor blades, weapons, or hazardous materials should be used. Also keep in mind that you will have to bring your entry with you, so that may mean traveling by air with it. Construct it accordingly.

To enter in-person, bring your entry with you to Fishlips for the anniversary event. Entries must be available for photographs, and participants agree to having photos of their Mecos posted publicly on our website. Entries remain the property of the submitter after the contest. Yes, you keep your own creations!

For the online portion of the contest, the rules are essentially the same except there are no size or hazardous material restrictions (please don’t do anything dangerous, though). Instead of submitting a physical object, to enter online you will email good quality, unaltered photos of the Meco you create to SpaceTweepSociety at gmail dot com, by noon EDT (16:00 GMT) on May 12, 2010. You will receive a confirmation email when your entry is received.

There is no fee to enter the contest, either the in-person or online. Prizes will be awarded to the following: most creative, most interesting use of materials, best craftsmanship, funniest, and some other areas that will be announced at the event. Prizes for the online competition will consist of gift certificates which will be emailed to the winners. Gift certificates are good for international purchases, so no one is excluded. Judging will be conducted by a diverse panel of your Tweep peers.

I realize that there is not much time before the deadline to work on these entries. That is intentional. This is supposed to be a fast, enjoyable project, rather than something that is labored over for weeks. Have fun with it! I can’t wait to see all the Mecos!

Space Tweep Society 1st Anniversary Twelebration!

The first anniversary of The Space Tweep Society is coming up very soon.  To celebrate, a little early, @flyingjenny and I have been planning a stellar party for all the tweeps at the STS-132 launch and in the area.  For those not able to be at the launch, DON’T WORRY! We have fun for you too – details to come!

Where: FishLips

When: Friday, May 14th 6:30pm – ???

Map: http://www.fishlipswaterfront.com/directions.php

For those that are ready for a fun time, join us after the STS-132 launch at 6:30pm.  There is no cover fee to get into the event and appetizers (finger food) will be provided.  There will also be a special space-themed drink menu!  Ever wanted to try some Rocket Fuel? What about Meco’s Revenge? We’ve got some drinks that will help get you into orbit!  You are responsible for your own drinks and any additional food you order.

In addition to being able to hang out with fellow tweeps, this twelebration has some goodies too!  There are going to be prizes from our sponsors – ThinkGeek, Lands End, CollectSpace, and Proach Models.  Change in plans: Prizes will be awarded as contest prizes. Contests to be announced! Watch this site and @spacetweeps for contest information.

Remember, for those tweeps that can’t be at the event, we are going to have an interactive event for you too!  Details are on the way!

We have listed the event on Plancast as well, so you can see many of the tweeps who are coming to the event. Note: you do not have to sign up on Plancast in order to come to the party; it is strictly voluntary.

If you have questions, feel free to ask @flyingjenny or @astrogerly.  Hope to see everyone there – it’s going to be stellar!

Visit to ESA EAC, DLR and Technik Museum Speyer: technical trip debriefing

Imagine a dream trip to major space facilities, where you meet several astronauts. Add a visit to a geeky aerospace wonderland, and the opportunity to share the fun with your space enthusiast friends. I did such a trip.

From January 14 to 16, 2010, I did a short trip to Germany with Italian ForumAstronautico.it friends and space tweeps Giuseppe Albini (@GiuseppeAlbini), Luca Frigerio (@Spazionauta), Michael Sacchi (@signaleleven), Marco Zambianchi (@marcozambi) and Alberto Zampieron (@albyz85). We visited the ESA European Astronaut Centre (EAC) and a major DLR German aerospace agency facility in Cologne, and Technik Museum in Speyer. Space Tweep Society mascot Meco the Birdonaut was also part of the crew.

The trip was made possible by the kindness and assistance of our friend Samantha Cristoforetti, one of the new ESA ascans, whom we met with her colleagues.

Mission Day 1: ESA EAC and DLR

The first day we visited ESA EAC in Cologne. Samantha greeted us and joked that we were probably going to see more in the next few hours than she was able in past months. She and other ascans are so busy with basic training, that they spend most of the time there locked into classrooms.

Our excellent guide Stuart, a biomed support engineer, introduced EAC and showed us ATV (holy lift, it looks heavy) and ISS module mockups, and the Neutral Buoyancy Facility. We were able to venture inside the Node-2 Harmony and Columbus mockups. We also visited the ISS Medops control room while an EVA was under way.

Samantha later invited us for a coffee break with the ascans. They had an unexpected free moment due to a delayed lesson. After considerable deliberation, in which we mumbled something like “let us see, we are not that busy right now, this might fit in our schedule, sure, yeah, why not?”, we finally accepted. The whole decision process took approximately 0.012 seconds, possibly less.

After the coffee break Samantha and the ascans, um, well, “insisted” that we take group photos, which we did in front of the Node-2 and Columbus mockups another 0.012 seconds later. In the photos we wear sweatshirts with the patch of ISAA (Italian Space and Astronautics Association), our space outreach organization. I guess the ascans filed the experience under “survival training”.

Later that day another guide gave us a tour of the DLR facility. We saw such space treats as the Rosetta Philae lander control room, the ISS payload operations control room, and more. DLR has a scope similar to NASA’s in that it does both aviation and space, but it also deals with energy and transportation.

Mission Day 2: Technik Museum Speyer

The second day we drove over 250 km south to visit Technik Museum in Speyer. The museum is such a geek paradise, chock full of interesting and unique aerospace artifacts, that I don’t know where to start. There are many planes, helicopters and ships on display, most of which are walk-in exhibitions: you can freely enter the vehicles, explore them and take pictures. Kudos to the institution.

The most interesting space vehicle at Speyer is the OK-GLI Buran shuttle for atmospheric test flights, a sort of Soviet equivalent of the NASA Enteprise Shuttle. You can climb to the cargo bay and see the cockpit, or inspect Buran’s bowels by peeking inside the aft compartment through the floor hatch.

The large Buran building is packed with planes, cars, motorbikes, and all sorts of vechicles and machines. There are many more interesting space artifacts and flown items: the Soviet BOR-5 suborbital test vehicle (a Buran 1:8 scale model), Sokol and Orlan suits, Soyuz and Mir parts, you name it. So many things to see…

I almost forgot a minor item. In front of the Buran building there is a whole Lufthansa Boeing 747 arliner, which you can again freely enter and explore from the lower deck to the cockpit. What’s amazing about this sky giant is that it is not on the ground, but perched tens of meters above as if it was still flying. Mighty Jumbo.

Mission Day 3: sightseeing and wrapup

We spent the third and last day visiting downtown Cologne and the Cathedral, which stands taller than VAB. Before reentry we spent some wonderful time at an informal private gathering with ESA people. Thanks again to Samantha and all of them for the unique experience.

Just a few hours after we safely landed at Malpensa MXP airport, Samantha told that we had been lucky: all weather hell broke loose, and Cologne was in a snowstorm. Isn’t Buran the Russian for snowstorm?

Photos and videos

We took so many pictures, videos, panoramas and 3D anaglyphs that we are still downlinking and processing, er, posting them. The material is being collected in a few online places, which you may want to keep visiting to check the latest additions:
